About Us

The Council shall carry into effect the objectives of the Society, propagate the Society’s objectives save as herein provided to the contrary, all powers, rights and duties vested in or imposed upon the Society may be exercised or performed by The Council.

The aims and objectives of the Society shall be:,

1. To provide a forum for all ophthalmologists and all those interested in ophthalmology to meet and share knowledge as well as engage in scientific discussions and practical demonstrations

2. To promote and encourage research in ophthalmology in particular and generally in medical, surgical and allied health sciences;

3. To advance the study of ophthalmology, subspecialties and allied arts and sciences; to promote the highest degree of skill and efficiency in their practice

4. To increase the number of Ophthalmologist in Tanzania while promoting application of their knowledge for the good and health of mankind.

5. To maintain, honor, uphold ethics, safeguard, and promote the interests of the members in the practice of Ophthalmology

6. To represent, protect all members as regards to conditions of practice.

7. To assist members, whenever possible and when deemed necessary, who by reason of adversity are in need of help.

8. To promote and maintain a standard of professional conduct, code of ethics and observe their application by all members for the dignity of the profession

9. To relate harmoniously with the College of ophthalmology of Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa (COECSA) or any other similar College or Society in Africa and rest of the world provided that by doing so the Society will achieve its objectives.

10. To publish newsletters, bulletins, proceedings or scientific conference and ophthalmic journals

11. To disseminate such information as may be thought necessary by means of journals, bulletins or any other method for the fulfillment of these objectives

12. To identify and point out to the respective authorities, organizations, individuals, if and when, in any way the dignity and professional image of Ophthalmology is being compromised.

13. To purchase, take on lease, exchange, hire or otherwise acquire any real, personal, movable or immovable property, rights, interests or privileges necessary or convenient for the purpose of the Society

14. To sell, dispose of, exchange, hire, mortgage, charge, let, deal with, or turn to account, any of the property and rights of the Society, as may from time to time be considered expedient or desirable in the interests of the Society

15. To borrow, or raise or secure the payment of money without limitation as to amount, in such manner, on such terms and conditions and upon such security as may be determined, and in particular by pledge, mortgage, hypothecation; or by debentures or debenture stock, perpetual or otherwise, charged upon all or any of the property of the Society (both present and future) personal, real, movable and/or immovable and to purchase, redeem or pay off any such securities;

16. To accept, or refuse any gift endowment or bequest made to or acquired by the Society, for the purposes of any specific objective connected with Ophthalmology practice and to execute any charitable or other trusts which may be considered expedient or desirable in the interests of the Society.

17. To invest the monies of the Society not immediately required for the purpose thereof in or upon such investments, securities or property as may be thought desirable;.

18. To draw, make, accept, endorse, execute and issue promissory notes, bills of exchange, and other negotiable or transferable instruments

19. To establish and support or aid in establishment and support of any charitable or benevolent associations or institutions connected with the purposes of the Society, or calculated to further the objects of the Society.

20. To collaborate or foster understanding with Ophthalmology training institutions in order to improve the quality of education.

21. To arrange and hold periodic meetings of the Society for professional, educational and social purposes

22. To maintain an up-to-date list of bonafide members.

23. To facilitate information exchange between members, health-care professionals,.

24. To collaborate with similar societies, organizations or allied professionals and establishments in Tanzania, Eastern Africa, neighboring countries, commonwealth and other countries in the world for the attainment of these objectives.

25. To delegate some of the powers of the Society to the Council or any committee or committees consisting of one or more members

26. To pay out of the funds of the Society all costs, charges and expenses preliminary and incidental to the promotion, formation, establishment, registration and advertising of the Society.

27. To cooperate with Tanzania Medical Association (MAT) in giving professional points aimed at accrediting members to work as medical practitioners in Tanzania.

28. To do all such other things as are incidental or conclusive to the attainment, promotion or carrying out of the foregoing objects or any of them.
